Bipolar Disorder Treatment, Care and Remedies

How to treat and care for person/s with bipolar disorder:

Up until now, there is no advance or effective cure for bipolar disorder. Although proper treatment  in many case helps a lot of  people with bipolar disorder gain better control of their mood swings and related symptoms. And since bipolar disorder is a lifelong and a recurrent episodes of illness, people with the disorder needs a long-term treatment to maintain control of bipolar symptoms.

The primary treatments for bipolar disorder may include medications, an individual, group or family psychological counseling (psychotherapy), and or education as well as support group activities. Successful treatment of bipolar disorder depends on a combination of factors and medication alone is not enough. 


In order to get the most out of treatment, it's important to know a few basic ideas like the following:

  1. Educate yourself about the illnes - your health care providers can help you to understand and separate your true identity from your symptoms. So you'll see how the illness affects your behavior.
  2. Communicate with your doctors and therapists - be open to your doctors or therapists about behaviors you wanted to change.
  3. Have a strong support system - your family or loved ones best suit this criteria, involve them in the treatment process or if possible educate them to gain perspective as well as provide feedback to cope for future crisis that may arise.
  4. Make a healthy lifestyle choices - a healthy lifestyle includes regular sleeping hours, healthy eating, avoidance of alcohol, drugs, and risky behavior.
  5. Stick to your treatment plan or routine - it is presumed to be important  to talk to your health care provider and ask advice first before you make any changes to your medication or schedule.  

Medications

A number of medications are available to help stabilise mood swings.If one medicine doesn't work well for you, there are a number of others to try. Medication for bipolar disoder may include but not limited to the following drugs/substances:


  • lithium carbonate
  • anti-convulsant medicines
  • anti-psychotic medicines
