Dandruff also known as scurf or ( Pityriasis Simplex Capillitii in Latin) is the shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp, (and must not to be confused with a dry scalp). Dandruff is a common scalp condition that affects almost half of the population among the pre-pubertal age as well as of any gender and ethnicity.
Dandruff can be chronically long-termed or a result of certain triggers. People with dandruff may also experience irritation and redness on the scalp. And although dandruff isn't contagious and is rarely serious, it can cause embarrassing moments and maybe difficult to treat.
Some people with severe dandruff may expereience social or self-esteem problems. Therefore, certain treatment may be useful and beneficial for both physiological as well as psychological reasons. However, many experts do agree that these are not caused by poor hygiene.
Dandruff causes or triggers may include any or several reasons including the lists below:
- Dry Skin - the most common cause of itchy, flaking dandruff are those that normally one gets during winter (when it's too cold) and when the place is overheated (too hot)- the combination that literally cause dandruff from dry flaky skin.
- Irritated or oily skin (Seborrheic Dermatitis) - individulas with seborrheic dermatitis are very prone to dandruff. Seborrheic dermatitis affects many areas of the skin and not just the scalp , but also other areas of the skin rich in oil glands- that which includes the backs of the ears, the breastbone, eyebrows, and sides of the nose.
- Malassezia - malassezia is a fungus that lives on everybody's scalp. Generally, it will cause no problems at all. If this fungus grows out of control, it feeds on the oils our hair follicles secrets. This may cause irritation on the skin of your scalp and cause more skin cells to grow.
- Not enough regular shampooing - with no regular shampooing of hair, some skin cells and oils of the skin can build-up that may cause dandruff.
- Reaction to hair product (sensitivity) - sensitivities to certain ingredients in hair care products or hair dyes can cause red, itchy, scaling scalp that may lead to dandruff. If you also tend to use too many styling products or shampooing too much could cause scalp irritation and may end up causing dandruff.
- Skin Conditions - persons with certain skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema and other skin disorders are another cause that prompts frequent dandruff problems this individuals than their counterparts.
